History Of The
Joint Awards

The scheme was discussed in 1924, between the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers in London, the Cutlers’ Company and Sheffield University, initially to support research work for the benefit of the Sheffield trades. Through the financial generosity of the Armourers and Brasiers, it became a successful scheme offering prizes for work-based and practical reports from young people.

Joint Awards

The event, which was first held almost 90 years ago, is sponsored by the Cutlers' Company and the Worshipful Company of Armourers & Brasiers, from London, to encourage young people ‘to discover improved methods’ and to broaden their horizons. In 1924the Cutlers’ Company received a gift from the Armourers & Brasiers of £300 to help Sheffield traders ‘combat foreign competition’. Over time it evolved into the competition we have today.

The Awards are divided into three categories:

Engineering Awards:  Open to engineering apprentices and students at Sheffield Hallam University and local industry.

Design Awards:  Open to design students at Sheffield Hallam University.

Pontifex Awards: Open to young trainee managers in the steel industry.  This is named after a Past Master of The Worshipful Company of Armourers & Brasiers.
