JOINT EDUCATION AWARDS, 2011
A total of 16 young engineers, managers and designers were recognised recently at the annual Joint Educational Awards, held at the Cutlers' Hall. The event, sponsored by the Cutlers' Company and the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers, recognises the importance of education and learning through travel and book awards.
The winners, together with their families and mentors, were welcomed by the Master
Cutler, Professor Bill Speirs, who said: “You, as prize winners, should be very
proud of your achievements. Adding this award to your CV will enable you to
differentiate yourself from your peers and we at the Cutlers’ Company are
delighted to recognise your talents and wish you every success.
“Never forget that trainees and apprentices are fundamental to the success of
Sheffield and manufacturing in this region – and you are among the very best.”
The Master then reiterated his theme for the year –supporting young people and encouraging them to develop their talents.
Professor Philip Martin, pro vice-chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University since last September, was in full agreement: “There is probably nothing more important to this region and this country than the encouragement and reward of young talent - talent which will drive the future agenda of the country’s prosperity and the well-being of our society,” he said. “And, as we have seen this evening, it is not just universities which foster young talent; there is also an important network of organisations and industries.
“I have been in higher education for 35 years and the one really important lesson I have learnt is never to underestimate the capacity and potential of our young people. We have a responsibility to support and encourage them – as this event does.”
The Joint Educational Awards were first established in the 1920s by the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and the Worshipful Company of Armourers & Brasiers. Then, as now, apprentices and students were encouraged to expand their knowledge of the industry through travel and reading. All entrants make a short presentation before a panel of judges on where they would like to travel and why.
