On Friday 24th January, our Better Learners Better Workers (BLBW) Ambassadors had an exciting opportunity to meet with construction company, McLaughlin and Harvey.

Tarlok Klair, Responsible Business Lead for McLaughlin and Harvey, came into Firth Park Academy to run a workshop about the varied jobs and career paths within the construction industry. The session focused on the role of a quantity surveyor – an important role within the industry.

In the workshop, students were given a challenge to complete in small groups to develop teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills. They were tasked with designing and constructing a large tower using LEGO. The challenge was to create a cost-effective and stable structure while minimising the use of materials.

The teams designed the tower and calculated the cost to build, whilst taking into consideration the time and material costings. Once the towers were built, each group had to present their towers to a panel of judges who picked the most cost effective and stable design.
