Colonel George Andrew Kilburn MBE DL


George Kilburn was born in Yorkshire and educated at Trent College, the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the École Superiéure de Guerre/Collége Interarmées De Défense (French Staff College). 

During his thirty six years military service, he commanded at various levels including The 3rd battalion The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, in Sheffield  He has also held staff appointments at every level from the tactical to the grand strategic.  He served in more than 19 countries and with international organisations including NATO, the UN, the EU and the AU. He retired from the Regular Army in 2010. 

He has been Chief Executive of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire (Sheffield) since July 2010

He was awarded the MBE in 1990, the NATO Meritorious Service Medal in 2003 and appointed a DL for South Yorkshire in 2016.

He was appointed Honorary Colonel (Reserves) of The Yorkshire Regiment in June 2014.  He is a Member of the Regimental Council and a trustee of various military charities. 

George has been married to Penny for 39 years.  They have 4 children and 6 grandchildren so far.

His hobbies include reading, fishing, cooking and wine.  He enjoys most sports but mainly as a spectator these days.  He has tried golf but is not gifted.
