INTRODUCING THE COMPANY’S NEW MASTER ELECT AND WARDENS ELECT

The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire is proud to announce its new Master Elect, Ian Nicholls, alongside Senior Warden Elect, Victoria Clarke Brown, and Junior Warden Elect, Charles Turner MBE DL.

Their election marks the beginning of the next chapter in the Company’s annual cycle of leadership – a tradition that has continued for centuries.

But what does “Master Elect” actually mean, and what happens next?

A New Master Cutler Every Year

At the heart of the Company is the office of the Master Cutler, who serves as the Company’s ambassador and acts as the Voice of Manufacturing for Sheffield and South Yorkshire.

A new Master Cutler is elected each year by the Company’s Freemen. The election traditionally takes place in September, ahead of the formal Installation of the new Master Cutler in October.

This means that, for a short period between election and Installation, the successful candidate is known as the Master Cutler Elect. They prepare to take on the role while the current Master Cutler completes their year in office.

The Master Cutler’s year is about much more than a ceremonial title. The Master represents the Company and its members across Sheffield, South Yorkshire and beyond, championing manufacturing, business, skills, education and the wider interests of the region.

The Wardens: Supporting the Master Cutler

Alongside the Master Cutler are two Wardens: the Senior Warden and Junior Warden.

This year, Ian Nicholls has been elected Master Cutler Elect, Victoria Clarke Brown Senior Warden Elect, and Charles Turner Junior Warden Elect.

The three roles form an important part of the Company’s leadership structure, with the Wardens supporting the Master Cutler throughout their year.

The progression also provides continuity from one Mastership to the next. In recent years, the Senior Warden has progressed to become Master Cutler, with the Junior Warden progressing to Senior Warden. For example, in 2025 Ian Nicholls was elected Senior Warden alongside Master Cutler Professor Keith Jackson and Junior Warden Victoria Clarke Brown.

From Elect to Master

The next major milestone is the Installation of the new Master Cutler.

At this ceremony, the Immediate Past Master formally installs the new Master Cutler, while the incoming Wardens receive their badges and take up their respective roles. The ceremony is followed by a Service of Thanksgiving at Sheffield Cathedral and a celebratory luncheon at Cutlers’ Hall.

The process means that the Company benefits from a strong sense of continuity. Those moving into senior roles have already spent time learning about the responsibilities of the position, supporting the current Master and becoming familiar with the Company’s members, activities and wider role in the region.

A Tradition Dating Back to 1624

The annual election of the Master Cutler is part of a tradition that stretches back to the Company’s incorporation in 1624.

The Company was originally established to regulate and support the cutlery trades of Hallamshire. While its role has evolved considerably over the centuries, the annual election of a Master and Wardens remains an important part of its identity.

Today, the Master Cutler continues this tradition while representing a modern and diverse manufacturing community across Sheffield and South Yorkshire.

Looking Ahead

We look forward to welcoming Ian Nicholls as the Company’s next Master Cutler, alongside Victoria Clarke Brown as Senior Warden and Charles Turner as Junior Warden, as they begin their respective roles and prepare for the year ahead.

Their election marks not only a change in leadership, but the continuation of a tradition that has connected the Company with Sheffield’s manufacturing community for more than 400 years.
