2024 marks the 400th Anniversary of The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, as we commemorate our remarkable milestone, it is with immense pride that we share the news that His Majesty The King & Buckingham Palace have extended their warm wishes for our anniversary.
The recognition comes following a letter sent by our now Immediate Past Master, Charles Turner DL, who informed His Majesty The King of the Company’s celebration. The Company was officially formed through an Act of Incorporation passed by Parliament which received Royal Assent on 23rd April 1624. This Royal Assent marked the formalisation of The Company’s role within the cutlery trade in Hallamshire and required The Company to ensure the training and education of apprentices in the trade.

Over time, The Company has grown and evolved, adapting and leading various industrial revolutions. In 2024, the Master Cutler remains the voice of manufacturing for Sheffield and South Yorkshire and plays a pivotal role in representing the Region’s manufacturing companies both nationally and internationally. Similar to when the Company began in 1624, we continue to support education and the development of skills amongst young people through the Better Learners Better Workers programme and more recently has worked with The Sheffield College to develop a new block release Machining Technician Apprentice pathway.
The Company is also committed to supporting charitable causes, through donations to companies and organisations who operate and assist those within the South Yorkshire community. We achieve this through the Cutlers Combined Charitable Trust (CCCT) awards which are presented throughout various times in the year. The charities supported represent a diverse range of causes with the funds awarded to support their ongoing initiatives and future plans.
