The Charity Awards Ceremony – 14th June, 2022

The Company of Cutlers were very proud to sponsor a Charity Awards Ceremony at Cutlers Hall, Sheffield, hosted by the Master and Mistress Cutler, Mr James and Mrs Jo Tear.

There were 40 charitable recipients who were welcomed firstly by Colonel Philip Bates, Chief Executive of the Company, who gave them strict instructions to take no longer than one minute delivering their acceptance speech or we would be there all day!

Mr James Tear said it was a great day and a great honour to be able to give away £70,000 to such worthy causes and that the Charitable Trust, chaired by Mr Kenneth Cooke, had had a very difficult meeting to decide who to sponsor this year.

The Charities are all local and based in the Hallamshire region which encompasses Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham and cover a very wide range of causes including Support Dogs which take 2-3 years to train, the Sunday Centre supporting the homeless, ADIRA supporting black communities with mental health issues, Jamia Abdullah Bin Masood (RA) foodbank who distribute food to those in need and welcome people to come on a Friday to have a meal in their centre.  Also represented were Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), set up by parents whose 17-year-old son died suddenly because of an undiagnosed heart defect.  They now hold screenings four times a year for up to 400 young people to detect a problem before it is too late.  Various Cancer charities were awarded funding, alongside the Archer Project helping the homeless, KickBack Recovery Community who provide support for substance and alcohol addiction and LGBT Sheffield.

All these small Charities commented on how difficult the Covid pandemic has been for them in terms of raising funds and also taking it’s toll on vulnerable people.  Awards like these have an enormous impact on them and enable them to continue the fantastic work they do in the local community.

Mr James Tear thanked everyone for coming and for all the amazing work they do and encouraged everyone to spread the word and try to collaborate with each other.
