Charles Turner DL, MBA
The Master Cutler, 2023-2024

Charles Turner is a retired Army Officer and South Yorkshire based businessman running an international company specialising in the manufacture of industrial blades and machine knives. He is the 384th Master Cutler and will be in post for the Company’s 400th anniversary in 2024.

Charles was commissioned into the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in 1986 and saw active service in Cyprus, the Falkland Islands, the Balkans and Northern Ireland before retiring to join Edward Turner and Son Ltd, which trades as Durham-Duplex, in 2003, when his Father became the 365th Master Cutler. Since becoming CEO in 2006, Durham-Duplex has grown into an international Group with subsidiaries in Thailand, USA and Belgium and a sales office in Manchester. He is a modern Cutler with the scars to prove it.

In addition to the day job, he spent 20 years as the Sheffield Defence Advisor on behalf of the Secretary of State for Business and as Chairman of Made in Sheffield Mark Steering Committee, promoting the manufacturing industries of Sheffield on behalf of the Company, the Sheffield Chamber and Sheffield Council. He would love to use the Cutlers’ powers to destroy shoddy goods in Paradise Square if he can find a Sheffield company not operating in good faith!

He also chairs the Sheffield Assay Office, which celebrated its 250th anniversary in September 2023 and he sits on the British Hallmarking Council, a NGPB that oversees the 1973 Hallmarking Act, protecting consumers from fraudulent dealers in the jewellery industry and regulating the precious metal markets in the UK.

Charles has served as a Deputy Lieutenant for South Yorkshire since 2019. He completed an Executive MBA specialising in Manufacturing Management at Sheffield University in 2020 and enjoyed correcting the lecturers.

He is married to Sarah and they have 4 grown up children and a Golden Retriever. Sarah is a Chartered Accountant, scout leader, school Governor and sits on several education orientated charities. They are part of Christ Church Fulwood where Sarah also runs “Junior Jivers”.

Outside of work Charles’ interests centre around his family and friends but when released into the wild, and not walking the dog, he can sometimes be found playing tennis badly, shooting, sailing, watching rugby, or enjoying music.

Charles has chosen to support charities across the region to increase awareness of the Cutlers’ Company and the 400th anniversary. In Sheffield this will be The Sheffield Cathedral’s National Schools Singing Programme.
